It paired a 2 MHz 6502A with Apple SOS, but early units ran hot and the first 14,000 were recalled.
It had no cooling fan — Steve Jobs wanted a silent machine — so heat made chips creep out of their sockets; Apple's official remedy was to lift the computer a few inches and drop it back onto the desk.
The Apple III (stylized apple ///) was Apple's first business computer, designed by Wendell Sander and announced on 19 May 1980 as the machine intended to replace the Apple II in the office. It ran Apple SOS, whose hierarchical file system later fed into ProDOS and the Macintosh, and it was the first Apple product to let the user choose both a screen font and a QWERTY or Dvorak keyboard layout. The launch went badly: sealed in a fanless case, the machine overheated and chips worked loose from their sockets, and Apple recalled the first 14,000 units. Only about 65,000–75,000 were sold before the line was discontinued in April 1984, yet the III's file system and several of its engineers went straight into the Lisa and the Macintosh.
