The AppleCD 600e was Apple's quad-speed external SCSI CD-ROM drive, introduced in May 1995 at the low price of US$349. It read data at up to 600 KB/s in Mode 1, more than twice as fast as Apple's double-speed drives, with a 256 KB buffer, a sub-200 ms access time and a caddy-less tray mechanism. Its combination of speed and affordability brought CD-ROM multimedia to mainstream Mac users.
